If a federal government department or agency requests customer information from a financial institution, The Right to Financial Privacy Act sets out a very rigorous procedure that must be followed before the institution may provide the requested information. If the agency requesting the information is with a state or local government, the procedure for the institution to follow is a matter of state law.
